- Value has long been a central topic in business research. While prior research has advanced the understanding of value creation, less is known about value destruction. This doctoral thesis advances knowledge about the phenomenon through one conceptual study and two empirical investigations. The first study synthesizes extant literature on the topic, delineates key dimensions of value destruction, develops a typology, and examines illustrative cases. It thus contributes theoretically by refining the conceptualization of value destruction and elucidating the value tradeoffs inherent in destructive processes. The second study focuses on product destruction, a common practice among firms in a wide range of industries. The qualitative study investigates its manifestations, antecedents, and consequences, as well as potential mitigation approaches. It culminates in the development of a conceptual framework of product destruction and provides vision for value preservation as well as recovery approaches to address product destruction within firms. The third study addresses software updates made available to users by providers and analyzes how users’ value judgments shape their emotional and behavioral responses to software updates. Using a fuzzy-set qualitative comparative analysis, configurations are identified that consistently lead to happiness and the intention to continue using software updates. Overall, the findings offer important theoretical contributions and managerial implications by increasing awareness of value destruction and providing strategies to mitigate its occurrence. The thesis seeks to deepen the understanding of value destruction and stimulate further research on the phenomenon.
